The Vile Creature Interview

I talk to Vile Creature, an Ontarian blackened-sludge duo whose new album Cast of Static and Smoke also comes with a short story written by the band. So it’s like writing and metal. Which is what this show’s about. We also talk about roller derby, cookies, being sticky, online dating, Ursula K Le Guin, complicated metallurgy-based fantasy series, anti-oppressive politics, pets and Welsh racial identity.

You can listen to Vile Creature on Bandcamp: https://vilecreature.bandcamp.com/

And buy Cast of Static and Smoke when it’s released on March 7th on Halo of Flies.

The Sarah Podcast (Scott McClanahan’s The Sarah Book)

In this episode, I discuss what it means to be a Dirtbag in reference to Scott McClanahan’s The Sarah Book, and relate the true story of my high school years, when I found myself very much in love with a girl (Noelle), who I wanted to take to an Iron Maiden concert, even though she had a boyfriend, but who ended up taking *me* to an Iron Maiden concert in a heartwarming twist. I also talk about Ramen, porn theatres, atonal music, Chapo, Appalachia, academia and I read poetry like I’m fancy or something.

Blockchain Cryptocurrency Dolphin Sex Bitcoin (Alissa Nutting’s Made For Love)

THE FIRST PODCAST TO BE ENTIRELY ENCODED IN THE CRYPTO-BLOCKCHAIN OF BITCOIN, but is also about sex with dolphins, so there’s no reason to not give me all of your money. I’ll talk about Alissa Nutting (@alissanutting)’s book Made For Love, but also Large Adult Sons, prose style, why I had to be graded 69, orgies, molly, bitcoin, dank memes, dolphin sex, Aziz Ansari breaking my heart, initial coin offerings… and I issue more terrorist threats!

Robot Nut Rising: Revengeance (Annalee Newitz’s Autonomous)

This week I read Autonomous by Annalee Newitz, and for once I actually enjoyed something. As always I ask the important questions: can robots nut? What doth capitalism? When everything can be owned… can robots nut? I also talk about Ready Player One, The Rapture of the Nerds, Metal Gear Solid, conventions of the Noir genre, my snow-plow guy, the politics of the X-men, capitalist realism and whether robots can nut.

The Calgary-Edmonton War of ’18 (Sebastian Junger’s Tribe)

Sebastian Junger is the author of War and The Perfect Storm and the director of the Oscar-nominated film Restrepo. He’s also bae af, but that’s neither here nor there. His short book Tribe kinda-almost argues against human civilization, so you know I’m into it. I’ll talk about Pirates, Native American torture practices, how to blow up a dam (it’s easier than you think!), the siege of Sarajevo, my plan to fix the city of Calgary through perpetual war with our rival city Edmonton, and I ask Mr. Junger if he would like to see Jumanji.
